Water is life and has been the lifeline of the human race since the aeon of time. Acute dearth of clear drinking water incessantly plagues the society at large and the results of consuming water with high levels of fluoride has been a neglected matter for ages.
In urban Karnataka, drinking water and sanitation lag behind the national average Drinking water remains a big problem in Karnataka’s urban areas. According to SECC (Socio-Economic and Caste Census, 2011) data, only 66 per cent of households have drinking water available on the premises, as against 72 per cent in the rest of the country.
Ground water in most cities and over 19,000 villages contains fluorides, nitrates, pesticides…etc. all beyond the permissible limits. Quality of drinking water thus continues to be a concern and this is reflected by the fact that about 21% of communicable diseases are water borne and 75% of water related deaths are that of children below five years.
In 2015, the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) estimated that 660 million people still do not have access to improved drinking-water sources and over 2.4 billion people do not have access to improved sanitation. A large financing gap has been identified as one of the greatest barriers to achieving these targets.
As per the UN GLAAS 2017 report there are financing issues for the WASH projects for the government as it contributes around 50% to 75% of the required funding.
